Local Organizers and Perpetrators of the Holocaust from the Kraków Gestapo: The Case of the "Jewish Section"

Alicja Jarkowska's article, "Local Organizers and Perpetrators of the Holocaust from the Kraków Gestapo: The Case of the 'Jewish Section,'" provides a source-rich analysis of the activities of the Jewish Affairs Section (Section IV-B-1) of the Kraków Gestapo between 1939 and 1944.

The author presents, both chronologically and thematically, the role played by the heads of this department—including Paul Siebert, Oskar Brandt, Wilhelm Kunde, and Hermann Hubert Heinrich—in the planned extermination of the Jewish community in occupied Kraków. The study documents in detail the direct involvement of Gestapo officers in the systematic plunder of property and in crimes committed in the ghetto and at the ZAL/KL Plaszow concentration camp. An important element of the analysis is the reconstruction of the operational methods employed by the German security apparatus, which relied on an extensive network of approximately 2,000 informants and agents of various nationalities. This network was used to locate Jews in hiding and to infiltrate the structures of the Polish underground resistance. These events unfolded against the backdrop of Kraków's particular status as the capital of the General Government, a city characterized by a heavy presence of German security and administrative services and pervasive terror.

The article's source base includes, among other materials, reports produced by the counterintelligence service of the Home Army (Armia Krajowa), German personnel records, documents from the archive of the Jewish Historical Institute, and postwar investigative and court records.
